Game Review: A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (2nd Edition)

True to the nature of George R.R. Martin’s most famous work, A Game of Thrones: The Board Game is epic, complex, and will soak up a lot of your free time. At its most basic it’s a war game that sees you trying to control the castles and strongholds scattered among the territories of Westeros, but there’s a delightful amount of backstabbing, false alliances, and just generally screwing your friends over. It’s a good game for groups of friends that like to argue with each other loudly and often, preferably while drinking copious amounts of beer.

The Game of Thrones: Living Card Game that Fantasy Flight Games put out is incredibly fun, so you can bet that I’m dying to get my hands on their board game. This game’s been out of print for years and they have this second edition on the way in the next couple of months. It apparently has some improvements to the original title, like new art and elements from the two expansions.

After being disappointed by Feast for Crows I’m finally diving into A Dance With Dragons, as well as playing A Game of Thrones: Genesis whenever I’ve been able to. Definitely been on a George R.R. Martin kick these past few months. Dying for that HBO series to finally hit dvd so I can watch it, too.

Even better though, a good friend of mine is currently reading Storm of Swords and texting me everything something eventful happens. Anyone who’s read the book knows this means that she’s constantly barraging me with OMGs and THE FUCK!?!s, while I just keep replying “Just keep reading…” like an asshole. Such a great book.

YES. My first “big box’ expansion for Arkham Horror has arrived. We’re going to get devoured.

Can’t believe I’m excited about a new Star Wars game.

True story- I let out an audible “Oooooh!” when I read Fantasy Flight’s announcement of their new Star Wars games and read the phrase “painted minuatures”.

It’s a good thing that I got married and had a kid before I started playing board games because I doubt I’d find anyone that would let me stick my dick in her now.

But seriously, this is the first Star Wars-related thing that’s got me excited in years. Fantasy Flight is known for their superb games and they’re working on two new titles for the franchise- a card game and a minutures games.

Gotta dig the cool new (OT!) art for the games. I was actually never the biggest Star Wars dork but it’s always great when someone special gets their hands on the franchise and does it right. Has it been since Knights of the Old Republic? Possibly.

So listen, Fantasy Flight, we gotta talk about all these great-looking games now. How am I supposed to afford Elder Sign, Gears of War: The Board Game (seriously), more Arkham Horror expansions now that they’ve been reprinted, that Game of Thrones board game…? Ugh.
